Abstract

The specific definition is a unilateral or bilateral sensorineural hearing loss greater than 30 dB that affects at least three consecutive audiometric frequencies and develops in a period less than or equal to 72 hours, most of which is idiopathic (2). It affects 5 to 27 per 100,000 people per year. The causes of sudden sensorineural hearing loss are classified as primary and secondary. Treatment includes systemic and topical corticosteroids, antiviral agents, hyperbaric oxygen therapy, vasodilatory agents, diuretics and other medications as complementary alternative treatments (5).
