Prevalence of sensorineural hearing loss in musicians who work in bars in Bogotá, Colombia

Abstract

Introduction: Musicians are at risk of hearing loss when they are exposed to amplified music and do not use hearing protectors. The objective is to determine the prevalence of sensorineural hearing loss in musicians working in bars in a town in Bogotá, Colombia. Methods: Descriptive cross-sectional study, 80 musicians were selected, physical examination, tonal audiometry, high-frequency audiometry, speech audiometry, and impedanciometry were performed. Results: 43 subjects had hearing loss 53.7%, 16 had unilateral hearing loss 20% and 27 had bilateral hearing loss with a prevalence of 33.7%. The median age was 29 years, the most frequently reported symptoms were: tinnitus, hyperacusis, and hypoacusis. The highest prevalence of hearing loss was in musicians who perform rock and classical music and string instruments. Conclusions: The prevalence of hearing loss in this sample is similar to previous studies; failure to use hearing protectors may be related to hearing loss.
