Abstract

Newborn hearing screening is a prevention and health promotion strategy aimed at identifying newborns with congenital and/or acquired hearing loss; its universal protocol includes all newborns with and without risk factors for hearing loss. Hearing loss is one of the most common congenital sensory diseases, with an incidence of 1 to 3per thousand live births. If hearing screening is not performed universally, more than 30% of newborns with hearing loss would not be diagnosed before 6 months of age.
