Radiological characterization of the frontal recess in patients without nasal pathology
Main Article Content
Abstract
Introduction: The frontal sinus recess varies according to the pneumatization of the surrounding cells. Its characterization has been performed using different scales applied to paranasal sinus CT scans. However, there is no gold standard for its evaluation. In this article, the frontal sinus recess is characterized in patients without sinonasal pathology in Colombia, using the International Frontal Anatomy Classification (IFAC) and the Kuhn scale. Methodology: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted, and 243 paranasal sinus CT scans with 486 frontal recesses were re-viewed. The anteroposterior diameter of the frontal recess was measured, and frontal cells were classified according to the IFAC and Kuhn scales. Results: The prevalence of right Agger Nasi cell was 92.18% and 91.77% on the left, the right supra-agger cell was 34.57% and 32.10% on the left, and the right supra-agger cell was 14.81%. The anteroposterior diameter of the frontal recess was 7.43 mm, being larger in men than in women. Discussion: The characterization of frontal sinus drainage is of great importance in otorhinolaryngological assessment. The present study found that the Colombian population has a prevalence of frontal recess cell pneumatization similar to the findings reported in the international literature.
