Nasal trauma approach at a reference center in the Colombian Caribbean: Retrospective analysis and management perspectives
Main Article Content
Abstract
Background: Nasal trauma is a common pathology in the practice of otolaryngologists, requiring comprehensive evaluation and treatment. This study aimed to analyze the demographic characteristics, etiology, and therapeutic approach to nasal trauma in a high-complexity hospital in the Colombian Caribbean. Methods: A retrospective analysis of 157 patients who were treated between January 2021 and January 2024 was conducted. Demographic data and information about the mechanism of trauma, diagnostic procedures, and treatment were collected and analyzed. Results: Most patients were young males. The primary cause of closed nasal fracture was interpersonal violence, while soft tissue trauma was predominantly caused by sharp and penetrating object injuries. Management strategies ranged from conservative measures to surgical intervention, depending on the severity of the injury. Conclusion: Nasal trauma presents with variable manifestations. A comprehensive understanding of trauma mechanisms and lesion characteristics is crucial for effective management strategies. This study provides insights into the epidemiology and management of nasal trauma in our region, aiding in the development of treatment approaches and personalized therapeutic measures.
