Abstract

Introduction: Acute otitis externa (AEO) is defined as a diffuse inflammation of the external auditory canal that may extend to the auricle or the tympanic membrane (1). In most cases (98%) its origin is bacterial and the most common pathogens are Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus, and it may be polymicrobial (2-11); the treatment is based on ototopic agents but in some cases it must be complemented with systemic management. Exposure to water and sweat, soap devices or alkaline drops, dermatological infections, local trauma and allergic reactions may contribute to its pathogenesis (18-20). Preventive strategies include avoiding the accumulation of water and moisture in the external auditory canal, maintaining the natural skin barrier healthy (24-27).
