Papillary cancer in thyroglossal duct cyst: A case series
Main Article Content
Abstract
Introduction: Thyroglossal duct cysts (TGDC) are unusual remnants of the thyroid gland. Papillary carcinoma of the thyroglossal duct is extremely rare in clinical practice. Case series: Four cases of patients with papillary carcinoma of the thyroglossal duct cyst are presented. Discussion: Papillary carcinoma of the thyroglossal duct cyst is considered a rare finding, occurring in approximately 1% of thyroglossal duct cyst cases. Total, thyroidectomy is recommended for cases with malignant transformation, especially if there is evidence of invasion or when the tumor exceeds 1 centimeter in size. Conclusion: Carcinomas arising from thyroglossal duct cyst remnants are rare and may present only as swelling of the anterior neck. The need for thyroidectomy due to thyroid disease, whether malignant or benign, is not uncommon in patients with thyroglossal duct cyst.
